I have always heard and seen posts and questions about this floating around the internet since forever ago....and I have never really taken the time to address this, until now! ;)
So, just why do Professional Artists charge "so much"?
This question is asked time and time again, not only for hair and makeup artists also to photographers, wedding planners...you name it. Now, I can't answer on behalf of all of my other hard working industry friends out there, but I can speak for myself...
The rates of myself, and my fabulous team (Krystie Ann Beauty Group) reflects the following:
Just like any other profession, you are paying for someone's knowledge and expertise. The more costly the service, the chances are that professional has been in their business and craft for a lengthy amount of time, they studied for x amount of years, and are PROFESSIONALLY certified in their field.
I am personally a certified hair and makeup artist. A proud graduate of CMU College of Makeup Art & Design (Formerly Complections), and have over 1000 weddings under my belt in the last 12 years of my professional career.
I have learned a thing or two along the way not only with a makeup application or hair appointment - but also what is involved with coordinating a timeline for services, how the wedding morning flows, how to keep things on track for the day. I can't tell you the number of dresses and veils I have helped steam, or remove a stain from a champagne or lunch accident... how many bouquets I have helped fix...anxious brides I have calmed.....I am not just there on the wedding day to glam you up, but gently help coach you through the day, and help keep you relaxed and pampered.
Bringing me to my next point.....
Having your hair and/or makeup done is a luxury service. Really, there is not much you should have to do to show up for your appointment on your wedding day...Roll out of bed, brush your teeth, wash your face and I'll glam the rest!
Of course, you can do your own hair and makeup service, but will it look the same? Most likely not.
I LOVE hearing from my clients how relaxed they feel while having their services done. That is a BIG part of it. That you really are leaving everything up to the Pro.

My time with a client is not just while they are sitting in my chair for their appointment. Things to keep in mind are: hours spent emailing, blogging, updating the grams and the snaps and the pins....etc.

Also, travel time, time spent cleaning, sanitizing, prepping my kit, set up and take down, not to mention the long days. My call time is anywhere from 6am-10am, and my wedding days are typically a 4-8 hour day without a break/food.
High End Product/Tools
Buying makeup for your own personal kit can be costly! Imagine the kit of a professional artist! One foundation bottle alone for a high end company runs anywhere from $25-$60/bottle. And as it is, the average person cringes at the though of investing that much in one product alone! Well - as a professional artist, It is our responsibility to keep a fully stocked kit with the BEST products made to withstand heat, humidity, sweat, tears and kisses. Not to mention a wide range of shades for all of our clients.

So, when you consider products like foundations, powders, bronzers, hair and makeup brushes, primers, hairpray, pins, blow dryers, flat irons....the WHOLE nine yards....it adds up! And depending on how busy your artist is...(I'm blessed to be doing at a minimum 3 weddings a week) you can imagine how often we also have to keep our kits replenished!

As a professional business owner, there are also costs involved to run our business. We don't get a pension, maternity leave, sick days or paid vacation. Taxes, insurance, website and advertising costs...
Honestly ladies, there are many GOOD artists out there that are newer to the industry and less experienced, and they may charge less, and if that is what works with your budget, go for it!
BUT, if you have the wiggle room to invest in a GREAT experienced professional....DO IT! You will not regret it! When you look back years down the road at your pictures from your big day, you want to look back and remember how special and divine you felt! I always say to my brides: (With Me,) "You will look and feel your very best!" ;)
